MARBLE SCULPTURE
"This scupture was created from marble taken from the quarry in Marble Colorado, the same source for the Lincoln Memorial. Colorado Yule marble is a pure white scupture grade stone. An important first step is selecting a high quality stone without cracks. I prefer to carve realistic, figurative scuptures, especially children. This sequence shows the removal of stone used to create the sculpture of Dallen, my second son," -- Dr. Denys.
Below the quarry in Marble, Colorado.
A piece of stone with no cracks needs to be found among the large castoffs from the quarry.
The selected piece. Dallen approves.
On the workbench, ready for carving.
Dr. Denys forms the initial shape with a 2.5 lb hammer and a sharp point chisel. Faithful dog Sydney watches the work.
Colorado Yule marble is a bit grainy, unlike the smooth and dense carrara marble, but it is almost pure white and good for portraiture.
The rounded shapes of the head and shoulders are exposed with a flat tipped chisel.
The face is formed from the initial round shape of the head.
A face with crude details is tediously carved.
Ever smaller and finer tools are used to add detail to the sculpture.
A rasp was used to smooth the marble. The face is nearly complete. The ear and hair still need to be sculpted.
The finished sculpture. Dr. Denys left the marble around the figure unfinished with chisel marks so there would be no question the piece was made from raw stone rather than cast.
